  1. I lived in Gabon, Africa last year. It is a small country on the west coast of Africa. As an initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Gabon and to promote the year of family farming they were trying to teach local farmers, who operate small family farms, to work with other local families to increase productivity. In Gabon much of the farming is still done in traditional ways (that is without much machinery). The tradition in Gabon is also for each family to operate it's own farm independently. As a result farmers are unable to produce large quantities. Therefore, the country is forced to import much of it's food. This drives of the cost of living, as food is quite expensive. For example, a mango (which also comes from an African country not far from Gabon) would cost $10!

Do you know what sorts of things they were doing to promote the Year of Family Farming in Canada?
